They are delicious and fantastic for a quick snack or after the gym. I didn’t do exact measurements of the ingredients because I didn’t have a recipe to go by, but the ingredients I used: 5 scoops Isagenix Organic Choc Protein, 1 can Sweetened Condensed Milk, 2 cups Rice Bubbles, 1/2 cup Dessicated Coconut. I mixed it all up adding a little more dessicated coconut until the mixture was firm and then I dropped dollops in a bowl of dessicated coconut and rolled into balls covered with coconut. Keep refrigerated. They look like this: https://skitch.com/beti/gjht8/look-like-proteiin-choc-balls YUM!!!

FACT v FICTION: Coenzyme Q10 helps keep you young

The buzz

There is probably no better advertisment for coenzyme Q10 than my Aunt Rosemary, who, at 86, has a spring in her step and a healthy glow. She puts her youthfulness down to CoQ10 supplements, which she says she has been taking for years. My sensible family GP, who is not the type to pop unnecessary supplements, swears by CoQ10, too. Now in his 60s, he still plays soccer and generally seems full of energy.”

I first started instructing spin classes several years ago and I am still at it now. I really love it; the workout and the feeling of cycling. My 23mo son cannot pedal yet, and I am very determined to teach him so yesterday I not only took his bike out, I also took mine out to demonstrate how to pedal.

I have an awesome Al frame hillman http://hillmancycles.com.au/ it is just beautiful.

Being on the bike for only a few minutes I noticed one huge difference between Spin and actual outdoor Cycling: Core Activation.

During my classes I make a big effort to talk about body positioning and cycling technique and I do find that some people still do struggle with it. But being on an a bike and actually cycling outside dramatically changes the situation; form is automatically better because the stabiliser muscles are engaged. I need to put in effort to think about my core muscles when on an indoor bike but outside it happens automatically. I guess it’s because you do not have something holding you upright.

I had never thought of this before but I am paralleling spin and cycling to treadmill and jogging!

But don’t think that spin classes are a waste… certainly not. THEY ARE AWESOME!!!

If you really focus on technique and core activation the benefits are amazing. I love it because it keeps me trained over the winter months.

Takings: When spinning make sure you activate your core.

Good technique: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v?=HRFNKhNhhJQ

When you become pregnant, you are not only anticipating a life-changing event by adding a future member to your family, but you are also coping with the many physical changes that your body experiences throughout your pregnancy. Many people will give you conflicting opinions and advice: “Don’t sleep on your back” “Don’t lay on your stomach” “Make sure you exercise” “Make sure you don’t exercise”, etc. What should you do about exercise during pregnancy, especially abdominal exercise?

“Biggest Loser proves genes don’t control weight, says Michelle Bridges.

From Sunday Life

I am not a scientist. However, I can’t help being fascinated by what is going on in the research world as it relates to obesity and weight management. One of the things scientists are focusing their attention on is the field of epigenetics, which explores how every gene a person has inherited ends up expressing itself in their physical and neurological characteristics. This subject is even more interesting now that science has unravelled the human genome sequence.”

EVER wish you could lose your love handles and banish those man boobs with the wave of a magic wand?

Well, wish no more – your fairy godmother has arrived and she’s armed with a handbag full of tricks to help you ”zap”, ”dissolve” or ”melt” away that stubborn fat.

Or at least that’s the tale being peddled by the cosmetic industry.

Some companies are charging more than $6000 for ”fat-dissolving” injections, while others promise to ”liquefy” your flab.

But this fat-busting fad might not have a fairytale ending.

Two Melbourne companies are being investigated by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) to determine whether their claims breach the law.

The medical regulator is scrutinising FatZap, which has centres across Melbourne and charges up to $3000 for a treatment that promises to ”zap” customers into shape.”

I found that over the years the Al free deodorant options have been quite small in number. In the body care shopping isle there would always be a huge selection of the typical Al deodorants but a very small selection, usually located at the bottom shelf, of Al free – the problem for me was that I just did not like the scents available. So I started mixing it up a bit!

Step 1 – buy a crystal deodorant block – the actual crystal – I have had mine for a few years now… they just last and last:

Step 2 – buy a pure essential oil mist; with the perfect scent for you. I personally LOVE citrus scents (Grapefruit, Lime and such)

Firstly apply the mist to moisten the armpit; then apply the crystal.

A healthy and inexpensive solution to not being stinky :)

Interesting reading after watching GATTACA last night… I hadn’t seen that movie in years.

In short… the answer is Genetics… but that doesn’t mean you don’t have to exercise if you are naturally petite.

“Personal training with the Gymstick

The Gymstick can be used in one-on-one personal training sessions. The advantage a Gymstick offers is that the trainer is playing a more active role, as they are effectively controlling the level of resistance provided to the client. With each exercise, this can be increased or decreased according to the intensity required. The trainer receives kinaesthetic feedback, which assists in appreciating the level of challenge that the client is undergoing – more so than with free weights.

An example of this is the chest combo series.”

[Read on]

Last weekend I did an awesome workshop with Marietta using the Gymstick for PT sessions… that night I trained a long distance runner who generally dislikes resistance training… he loved it! The next day I trained my PT Clients… they loved it too.

What a wonderful piece of equipment, and it is also great to have around the house – I bought the telescopic version which shrinks down to a compact size. Looking forward to doing more Gymstick workshops in the near future :)

JOPLIN, Mo. — In an economy that has people cutting the extras from their lives, Barbara Queen, of Joplin, says her exercise classes will not be among the things she forgoes.

Queen said Pilates classes have improved her overall health and that the expense of the classes is well worth it.

“It’s cheaper than blood pressure medicine. It’s cheaper than going to the doctor,” she said. “I’m out here doing yardwork. I’m over 60, and I can do things that I couldn’t do 10, 15 years ago.””

“ANYONE heading to a fitness class in Australia this weekend may notice a slight change to their routine. Instead of Lady Gaga or the Presets or Sneaky Sound System pumping out through the speakers as the instructor puts you through your paces, the music could be merely something that sounds similar. It could even be something very few people have heard before.”

Read on: http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/opinion/ppca-muscles-in-on-fitness-class-profits/story-e6frg6zo-1225869545494

This is extremely unfortunate for both group fitness instructors (people like me) and original artists (people like my sister http://joannexenidis.com/). I am forced to stop buying music by original artists and start finding music that is PPCA licence free… generally covers or songs under Creative Commons Licence.

I would usually spend hundreds each year on music by original artists that I wouldn’t ordinarily listen to, but purchase to play in my aerobics classes… well, no more!

“Superfoods are foods that contain a higher level and broader range of nutrients than other foods. Many of these are considered to be adaptogens: a class of plants that not only ‘adapt’ to their environment to survive but adapt to the internal chemistry of your body to redress its imbalances. Because of the propensity of superfoods to grow in extreme environments, they often contain large amounts of bioavailable minerals that are stored in their stems, leaves, and roots to endure harsh winters or windswept rock faces. Furthermore, superfoods have become recognised for their extraordinary medicinal and life-giving properties over centuries of traditional use by indigenous communities.”

As someone with the complexion of a vampire, I have never been in a tanning booth. I eschew base tans and head to the beach armed with SPF 55 and an umbrella. But for many men and women, tanning in a booth is a weekly (or even daily) event. For some, indoor tanning might be more than a simple indulgence; new research shows that indoor tanning can be addictive”

“Acai berries are the latest weight loss fad. These so called Super Foods that you take as a supplement to lose weight have been getting a lot of international attention. And like you have probably already seen; they are all over the internet in blogs and success stories of people who have apparently used the pills and lost a ton of weight. But we here at News 7 Australia are a little skeptical and aren‘t sure that we‘ve seen any real proof that these pills work for weight loss. So we decided to put these products to the test. What better way to find out the truth than to conduct our own study?”

Smoothies are a great snack that you can ingest on the go. But what I like about them most is that there are no rules, just add fruit, milk or soy, a protein of some sort (soy or rice) and anything else you like eg honey, spirulina (YUM), yoghurt… you are only limited by your imagination.

If you like to follow recipes: http://www.smoothierecipes.com.au/

But the main item which will make this simple is a good smoothie maker. Using a blender is really not the way to go if you want something quick… the clean up is annoying, and if you are making a really thick smoothie, you leave a lot of it on the walls of the blender. A good smoothie maker, like mine, is brilliant. The mixing cylinder is actually the smoothie cup, hence no double handling.

This is great for people on the go who want to make something quickly and not create too much mess.

Check to see that it is dishwasher safe before purchasing.

Good for making many smoothies at once… I find it too messy for just a single smoothie

“Hell hath no fury like a mummy blogger scorned – a lesson quickly learnt by Nestle this week after its attempt to buy bloggers’ affections backfired spectacularly.

Nestle has become one of the world’s most boycotted companies following international outrage by campaigners who claim that it is marketing baby milk formula as a substitute for breastfeeding to people in the developing world, who are often unable to mix it with clean drinking water.”

When my friend mentioned that another mutual friend of ours gets her fruit and veg delivered to her, I was intrigued. That led me to Google this type of service and I came across http://www.freshexpress.org/.

I first ordered the Couples Pack, just to give it a go! It was really great! Good quality produce at a fantastic price. So if you are a busy person and find that you want to make sure you are getting your fruit and veg, I highly recommend getting it delivered to you.

If you are in Melbourne AUSTRALIA, I recommend the guys I go with, and here are the reasons I think Fresh Express rock:

1. No commitments – all I have to do now is email them asking them to deliver for that week, they have all my details and they easily process it!

2. Ever changing menu – they don’t just deliver the same thing every week, you can check their “next week’s menu” to see what you will have delivered

3. Variety – I find that I always buy the same items when fruit and veg shopping… this will force me to start using other fruit and veg that I would not ordinarily buy. Eg Red Onions… I have never bought one of those before, but they are really nice in salads. Fuji apples… I always buy Granny Smiths, ALWAYS, but Fujis are so great :)

4. Quality – the quality of what I have received is just great!

This week I will be getting all the following for only $30 DELIVERED!!!

Family Pack

Bananas- 1kg

Royal gala apples- 5each

Golden del’s apples- 5each

Navel oranges- 5each

Green pears- 5each

Cauliflower- 1each

Sweet corn- 1each

Lettuce- 1each

Tomatoes- 1kg

Snow peas- 1pnt

Cont- cucumber- 1each

Mushrooms- 200g

Medium carrots- 1kg

Desiree potatoes- 1.5kg

Med- brown onions- 5each

Red onion- 2each

Sure, they can do with a little less animated gifs on their website, but they don’t specialise in web dev, they specialise in fruit and veg and they obviously are not paying some web developer big bucks to develop a fancy shmancy website, hence they keep their prices low :) I like that!!!

“Trying to slim down but can’t bear the thought of giving up your daily dish of dulce de leche fro-yo? No problem. Too much deprivation is bad for dieters — trimming more than 500 calories a day can slow down your metabolism and trigger cravings intense enough to sabotage even the most valiant weight-loss efforts, according to Cynthia Sass, R.D., coauthor of Your Diet Is Driving Me Crazy. So the only question is: How fast do you want to lose the weight? Whether your goal is to shed a pound a week (the amount you can lose if you cut 500 calories a day) or a pound a month (if you cut 100), we’ve got the tricks and tips you need to kiss those extra pounds goodbye — without kissing off cake.”

Myth: It’s normal for teenagers to be moody; Teens don’t suffer from “real” depression.
Fact: Depression can affect people at any age or of any race, ethnic or economic group.

Myth: Teens who claim to be depressed are weak and just need to pull themselves together. There’s nothing anyone else can do to help.
Fact: Depression is not a weakness, but a serious health disorder. Both young people and adults who are depressed need professional treatment. A trained therapist or counselor can help them learn more positive ways to think about themselves, change behavior, cope with problems or handle relationships. A physician can prescribe medications to help relieve the symptoms of depression. For many people, a combination of psychotherapy and medication is beneficial.”

Around 20 years ago there was an Eqyptian restaurant in St Kilda (Melbourne) which served the most ‘awesomest’ Foule Medamas. Since then I have been trying to track down the exact recipe – I found it a couple of years ago in the mind of a lady who worked at a Lebanese Bakery in Brunswick (Melbourne)… here tis:

Ingredients
1 can Foule M.
1 can Hommus
1 large Lemon (squeezed)
1 tb Cumin
Garlic to taste
Salt to taste
Pepper to taste
Lebanese Bread

Pour contents of Foule can (as is) in saucepan with Cumin, cook over low head.

In the mean time, place contents of Hommus can in bowl with lemon juice, salt, pepper and garlic – Mix well

Back to the Stove…
Place 2 tb of recently prepared hommus on the saucepan and stir.

Prepare the pita:
Place pita bread on plate. Add hommus and salad.

Once the Foule M have been cooking for around 5-10mins place some of the beans on the salad. Wrap bread and eat! YUMMO!
