Smoothies are a great snack that you can ingest on the go. But what I like about them most is that there are no rules, just add fruit, milk or soy, a protein of some sort (soy or rice) and anything else you like eg honey, spirulina (YUM), yoghurt… you are only limited by your imagination.

If you like to follow recipes: http://www.smoothierecipes.com.au/

But the main item which will make this simple is a good smoothie maker. Using a blender is really not the way to go if you want something quick… the clean up is annoying, and if you are making a really thick smoothie, you leave a lot of it on the walls of the blender. A good smoothie maker, like mine, is brilliant. The mixing cylinder is actually the smoothie cup, hence no double handling.

This is great for people on the go who want to make something quickly and not create too much mess.

Check to see that it is dishwasher safe before purchasing.

Good for making many smoothies at once… I find it too messy for just a single smoothie

“Hell hath no fury like a mummy blogger scorned – a lesson quickly learnt by Nestle this week after its attempt to buy bloggers’ affections backfired spectacularly.

Nestle has become one of the world’s most boycotted companies following international outrage by campaigners who claim that it is marketing baby milk formula as a substitute for breastfeeding to people in the developing world, who are often unable to mix it with clean drinking water.”

When my friend mentioned that another mutual friend of ours gets her fruit and veg delivered to her, I was intrigued. That led me to Google this type of service and I came across http://www.freshexpress.org/.

I first ordered the Couples Pack, just to give it a go! It was really great! Good quality produce at a fantastic price. So if you are a busy person and find that you want to make sure you are getting your fruit and veg, I highly recommend getting it delivered to you.

If you are in Melbourne AUSTRALIA, I recommend the guys I go with, and here are the reasons I think Fresh Express rock:

1. No commitments – all I have to do now is email them asking them to deliver for that week, they have all my details and they easily process it!

2. Ever changing menu – they don’t just deliver the same thing every week, you can check their “next week’s menu” to see what you will have delivered

3. Variety – I find that I always buy the same items when fruit and veg shopping… this will force me to start using other fruit and veg that I would not ordinarily buy. Eg Red Onions… I have never bought one of those before, but they are really nice in salads. Fuji apples… I always buy Granny Smiths, ALWAYS, but Fujis are so great :)

4. Quality – the quality of what I have received is just great!

This week I will be getting all the following for only $30 DELIVERED!!!

Family Pack

Bananas- 1kg

Royal gala apples- 5each

Golden del’s apples- 5each

Navel oranges- 5each

Green pears- 5each

Cauliflower- 1each

Sweet corn- 1each

Lettuce- 1each

Tomatoes- 1kg

Snow peas- 1pnt

Cont- cucumber- 1each

Mushrooms- 200g

Medium carrots- 1kg

Desiree potatoes- 1.5kg

Med- brown onions- 5each

Red onion- 2each

Sure, they can do with a little less animated gifs on their website, but they don’t specialise in web dev, they specialise in fruit and veg and they obviously are not paying some web developer big bucks to develop a fancy shmancy website, hence they keep their prices low :) I like that!!!

“Trying to slim down but can’t bear the thought of giving up your daily dish of dulce de leche fro-yo? No problem. Too much deprivation is bad for dieters — trimming more than 500 calories a day can slow down your metabolism and trigger cravings intense enough to sabotage even the most valiant weight-loss efforts, according to Cynthia Sass, R.D., coauthor of Your Diet Is Driving Me Crazy. So the only question is: How fast do you want to lose the weight? Whether your goal is to shed a pound a week (the amount you can lose if you cut 500 calories a day) or a pound a month (if you cut 100), we’ve got the tricks and tips you need to kiss those extra pounds goodbye — without kissing off cake.”

Myth: It’s normal for teenagers to be moody; Teens don’t suffer from “real” depression.
Fact: Depression can affect people at any age or of any race, ethnic or economic group.

Myth: Teens who claim to be depressed are weak and just need to pull themselves together. There’s nothing anyone else can do to help.
Fact: Depression is not a weakness, but a serious health disorder. Both young people and adults who are depressed need professional treatment. A trained therapist or counselor can help them learn more positive ways to think about themselves, change behavior, cope with problems or handle relationships. A physician can prescribe medications to help relieve the symptoms of depression. For many people, a combination of psychotherapy and medication is beneficial.”

Around 20 years ago there was an Eqyptian restaurant in St Kilda (Melbourne) which served the most ‘awesomest’ Foule Medamas. Since then I have been trying to track down the exact recipe – I found it a couple of years ago in the mind of a lady who worked at a Lebanese Bakery in Brunswick (Melbourne)… here tis:

Ingredients
1 can Foule M.
1 can Hommus
1 large Lemon (squeezed)
1 tb Cumin
Garlic to taste
Salt to taste
Pepper to taste
Lebanese Bread

Pour contents of Foule can (as is) in saucepan with Cumin, cook over low head.

In the mean time, place contents of Hommus can in bowl with lemon juice, salt, pepper and garlic – Mix well

Back to the Stove…
Place 2 tb of recently prepared hommus on the saucepan and stir.

Prepare the pita:
Place pita bread on plate. Add hommus and salad.

Once the Foule M have been cooking for around 5-10mins place some of the beans on the salad. Wrap bread and eat! YUMMO!

“Being diagnosed with diabetes is serious business. While there has been a lot of progress in treating diabetes, diabetics also need to face their accompanying risk for heart disease.

Adults who have been diagnosed with diabetes have more than twice the risk for heart disease than other, symptom-free individuals of the same age. Diabetics tend to have a greater incidence for coronary artery disease and strokes at a younger age than their healthier counterparts. While premenopausal women enjoy a moderate level of protection from heart disease due to high levels of estrogen, diabetes effectively “cancels out” any protection a woman might otherwise have during her childbearing years.”

“Fat-busting salad
What could be healthier or more low fat than salad? Well, it depends what’s in it and on it. In its basic state—a bed of salad leaves with chopped vegetables, it is indeed low fat and healthy. It’s what is added to our salads that gets us into trouble.

Salads prepared at restaurants or fast-food joints are not always the healthiest dishes on the menu. The salads listed below should raise some red flags.”

I would like to send out a huge thanks the audience, you :) Your encouraging feedback and support keeps this show going. The raving iTunes reviews help heaps too ;)
Thanks to the TPN gang for providing the medium to host and deliver the podcasts.

Vienna, my old co host, is living at the Gold Coast now and doing really well for herself, I am hoping one day in the near future she can co host the show again too. Thanks V for all the fun times we had creating the shows.
A big thanks goes out to all the guests I have had on the show. We have covered topics from Krav Maga to Kettle Bell Training with professionals in the fields.

Looking forward to many more years of podcasting on The Health and Fitness Show.

be fit and stay healthy,

So you probably think you’ve got this walking thing pretty much nailed. As you stroll around the city, worrying about the economy, or the environment, or your next month’s rent, you might assume that the one thing you don’t need to worry about is the way in which you’re strolling around the city.”
