“About a year ago, one morbidly obese (er, a tiny bit chubby) man began a quest to find out what happens when you stop being polite and try to exercise via Wii Sports (see above). Apparently after losing 9 pounds, dropping two points from his BMI, and 3-inches from his waist, he’s ready to go again, this time with the Wii Fit.”

What could be healthier or more low fat than salad? Well, it depends what’s in it and on it. In its basic state—a bed of salad leaves with chopped vegetables, it is indeed low fat and healthy. It’s what is added to our salads that gets us into trouble.

Salads prepared at restaurants or fast-food joints are not always the healthiest dishes on the menu. And those salad kits from the grocery store, with condiments and toppings included, offer convenience but may not necessarily be low fat. The salads listed below should raise some red flags.”

I would like to send out a huge thanks the audience, you :) Your encouraging feedback and support keeps this show going. The raving iTunes reviews help heaps too ;)
Thanks to the TPN gang for providing the medium to host and deliver the podcasts.

Vienna, my old co host, is living at the Gold Coast now and doing really well for herself, I am hoping one day in the near future she can co host the show again too. Thanks V for all the fun times we had creating the shows.
A big thanks goes out to all the guests I have had on the show. We have covered topics from Krav Maga to Kettle Bell Training with professionals in the fields.

Looking forward to many more years of podcasting on The Health and Fitness Show.

be fit and stay healthy,

It’s so easy, in fact, that we often pair it with other easy activities—talking, chewing gum—and suggest that if you can’t do both simultaneously, you’re some sort of insensate clod. So you probably think you’ve got this walking thing pretty much nailed. As you stroll around the city, worrying about the economy, or the environment, or your next month’s rent, you might assume that the one thing you don’t need to worry about is the way in which you’re strolling around the city.”

Speculation began that it might when patent filings surfaced last month, pointing to an integrated fitness system similar to the existing Nike+iPod kit for Nanos. Although there is no sign of the extra sensors mentioned in the patent, or its extra activities such as weight-lifting, the new Nike+ system should at least replicate the running support of Nike+iPod, and its corresponding website tracking and competition.”

“Snorkeling is a wonderful activity that can be enjoyed by almost anyone who has access to the ocean, a lake, river, pond or quarry. Snorkeling as an activity frequently lives in the shadows of scuba diving - another excellent pastime, but one that requires significantly more instruction, time and money. Most people who have snorkeled have done so only on group charters while on vacation, but snorkeling is an activity that can be done almost anytime, anywhere.”

I went indoor rock climbing the other day (with jwrigley and nic), wow, what a workout! I hadn’t been climbing for a while, so I really did miss how intense the workout was.

It was great to see parents taking their kids there. Climbing teaches them confidence, inner strength and great for self esteem.
I climbed at http://www.hardrock.com.au/ in the CBD. Really well designed place.

What I like about rock climbing is that it engages all muscles and helps you work them out using full range of motion. It is very challenging.

http://www.hardrock.com.au/

So you want to try Rock Climbing? What to expect and require:
You will be inducted before your first attempt… this is a really important step. The instructor will go through the belaying process and safety procedures. Many places have inductors onsite, so you don’t have to book, but I would call ahead just to be sure.

You will need a climbing partner. It is good to have one person that you can completely rely on to be your climbing partner.

Where to aquire all the equipment required:
I strongly recommend not to buy the harness, carabeena, chalk bag, etc until you have tried climbing at least twice and have really enjoyed it. These are not cheap items but if you plan to go climbing often, it is better that you purchase.

I keep a “climbing bag”, which has all my equipment ready to go for climbing… makes life really simple and you never have to worry about forgetting anything… just add water (a bottle of water, that is :)). I also have a swimming bag, snorkeling bag, and gym bag - easy to get ready, don’t have to worry about a checklist.
Can climbing be done instead of training at the gym?
It is funny but the climbing centres are usually referred to as gyms :) Climbing is the equivalent of an awesome resistance workout, with a little cardio. So you will still need a bit of extra cardio in your training regime and if you add stretching at the end of a climb you are completely covered!

Happy climbing :)

“Why Lemon Detox?
Many of us take our health for granted. It is not until we have taken the opportunity to cleanse our bodies that we truly realise that we can always improve our health and reduce the risks of disease and accumulation of toxicity in our bodies. Toxicity is the underlying root of many diseases and illnesses.

The Lemon Detox Diet is an all natural cleansing program designed to help with eliminating built up toxins in the body, and purifying the body. Every once in a while, every machine needs an overhaul, every system needs a cleaning, every worker needs a break. Our bodies are no different. The Lemon Detox Diet invigorates the body’s own ability to cleanse itself of accumulated toxins and helps normalise weight while we take a break from solid foods. The very purpose of food is to strengthen the body and maintain health, yet many of us have turned eating into a deadly act of weakening our bodies and destroying our health.”

[Read on and view website]

I have scheduled to do a podcast on this topic soon. It will not be an interview, I will be researching this and commenting on the basis of my professional opinion.

“According to an interview with Dr. Robert Lustig, Professor of Pediatric Endocrinology from the University of California, San Francisco, fructose, once touted as diabetic-friendly because it doesn’t raise insulin levels directly, could be a major culprit for the obesity epidemic, high blood pressure, and elevated blood levels of LDL in Americans and others worldwide as they adopt American-style diets. Fructose comprises 50% of table sugar and up to 90% of high-fructose corn syrup, both ingredients found in copious quantity in most American prepared foods.”

“Q: Is it true that it’s bad to eat carbs at night?”

[Read on]

hmmm not sure about the answer given here. Yes, most of what said is true, but I feel as though it is a little misleading. Maybe I have just misinterpreted the answer. Therefore, let me submit this to you with some hypothetical figures:

Day E Input: 6600kJ

Night E Input: 2000kJ - no energy from Carbs
Total: 8600kJ

Total daily E output: 7000kJ

According to the figures, over time you will put weight on because your overall daily output is less than your input. So I have easily shown that the energy input type at night is not a factor in putting on weight, it is the amount of energy given to the body as opposed to what is expended over the whole day.
I focused on this article because I have noticed a negative focus on carbs since the Atkins diet popularity increase. Carbs are not bad, what needs to be avoided is eating the same thing in vast proportions everyday. Or, starving the body during the day and binge eating at night. A well balanced diet is the way to go.

“Jetlag is actually caused by disruption of your ‘body clock’, a small cluster of brain cells that controls the timing of biological functions (circadian rhythms), including when you eat and sleep. The body clock is designed for a regular rhythm of daylight and darkness, so it’s thrown out of sync when it experiences daylight and darkness at the ‘wrong’ times in a new time zone. The symptoms of jetlag often persist for days as the internal body clock slowly adjusts to the new time zone.”

“Few men believe it, but you don’t need barbells, dumbbells, or machines to build muscle; in fact, weight-training equipment often inhibits the process. That’s because it requires you to be in a specific location, which might explain why more men consider themselves runners than lifters. After all, running is the most accessible form of exercise — anywhere you go, there’s your gym. But learn a little bit about physics and the same can hold true for your muscle workout.”

Workout by Cameron McGarr, C.S.C.S., Men’s Health

[Read on]

Nice article! Too many people believe that in order to exercise you need to join a gym… not true.

Exercise is everywhere!
“See those kids, potential dumbbells. Now rock me two hundy.” The Z Man
Instead of driving, walk, instead of walking, run.

But, to be fair to gyms they do offer something very important, convenience. Most people work during the day making it hard to get exercise in, especially people working in an office or in similar environments, whereby physical activity is not in the job description. The gym does offer a place to exercise when it is cold, dark and rainy outside. Thanks gym.

Generally, when we’re hit with any of these little ailments, our first inclination is to go to the pharmacy and drop $20 on some over-the-counter products that usually relieve the symptoms, but do very little to actually cure the problem. A word of warning: None of us is a doctor, so please don’t rely on these suggestions as factual, medical advice.”
