Get Thee to a Gym? Perhaps Not!
Howard McGarity says in this article, “Beware aerobics classes. This is especially true if you are older, in poor shape or seriously overweight. Most aerobics classes specialize in loud music and fancy footwork. If you are a beginner, forget it. If you can’t keep up, the pep rally mentality and one-size-fits-all instruction will leave you feeling fat and foolish.”
This is a very narrow minded view Mr McGarity. I can speak first hand as an Aerobics instructor - good instructors give participants several different options to work with. eg you can jump if you wish or you can keep it low without jumping, you can take really big steps or, if you are feeling unsure or out of breath, keep the steps small, or just march on the spot.
Joining a fun aerobics class allows you to do a fair bit of exercise without being bored, also it is supervised by a qualified fitness professional, giving you that extra safety aspect.
Granted aerobics isn’t for everyone, but to just write it off for beginners, older, overweight or unfit people is very presumptuous…we are all beginners at some stage! That is why most gyms have beginners’ classes.
One of the best activities for older people, overweight, or unfit people is Aqua Aerobics…and yes, this is an aerobics class.
